Megan’s body image issues began when she was five years old. She spent her childhood chasing thinness, and at fourteen found herself spiralling into anorexia. After recovery she spent years dieting, binging, losing and gaining weight. But then she found body positivity, quit dieting, and finally escaped the cult of thin. Now she’s determined to let as many people as possible know the truth: that we are all good enough as we are.
I was excited for this book to launch and I’m even more excited now I’ve read it (in just 2 days) to tell you all about it. I’ve followed Megan on Instagram for some time now, a – because I LOVE her hair and b – I think the message she shares with the world is pretty powerful and something we all need. Especially in this life we live in – obsessed with comparison, clean eating and #fitspo.
Hands up if you’ll admit you’ve spent an hour or maybe more obsessing with body image? Whether you’ve taken a screenshot of some fitness models latest #bodygoals post or you’ve stood in front of the mirror mentally mapping out the surgery you wish you could nip in here or tuck there. I’d take a guess that at some stage in our lives we’ve all wished our bodies were a tad different.
Body Positive Power tells the honest story behind Megan’s own journey from suffering with Anorexia to finding peace with her body and how body positivity has changed her life for the good. But more than that the book is CRAMMED full of research. Research that’ll open your eyes wide to what really goes on in the world when it comes to dieting. Who makes the rules? Why do we follow them? And who decides what your body should look like? Megan breaks down what the media dictates and sheds a totally new light on how we should all see ourselves. Why should we all feel like we have to conform to a body that sits in a ‘normal’ BMI scale? Are we all genetically made-up to be a size 8? Apparently not.
Some of what Megan talks about in the book really made me sit back and think about my own body and my own confidence. Even if I am a size X – will that change how I feel about myself? Will that one number change my life? Really?! It’s unlikely.
I think some will question health when reading this book. Surely if I just eat what I want, me putting on weight is one thing but what about what happens on the inside of our bodies when we over indulge? My advice is to read the book with a totally open mind. Don’t open up on page one already thinking about that latest bikini shot from Bikini A Day…and how many chocolate biscuits you’ve eaten. The book is more about confidence, self esteem and being happy than health. Although – there are some pretty fascinating facts about how the health industry talks about weight…this stuff made me gasp out loud.
I’m excited to hear what people think about Body Positive Power. I’m excited about the reaction from the diet industry. I think its a book that could change our outlook and could educate so many young women on body confidence for the better. Megan – you are a game changer! If you’ve ever struggled with your weight, compared your appearance or questioned whether you should try that latest fad diet – you should be buying this book!
