Have you ever been into a bookshop shortly after a life event that’s literally flipped everything you knew on its head?
This has happened many times for me. But one occasion absolutely changed my experience of one of the hardest moments of my life 18 months ago. And it involved this book.
24hrs earlier I walked away from my relationship. A place I knew for over a decade. A place I never thought I would leave. 2hrs before I sat at a nail appointment at a new salon trying to keep a brave face but inside repeating to myself ‘how do I do this?’, ‘how will I know this is the right decision?’.
With half an hour to spare before brunch and a big cry with a friend, I headed to my local bookshop. Here I was in good company - losing myself within the shelves and taking 5 minutes for some normality. And there, just one copy, in a bright neon orange was @maggiesmithpoet book. Keep Moving.
As if I needed a bigger sign from the universe. This was it. Keep Moving. Keep stepping forward. A book of small poems and prose about doing EXACTLY what I was doing. So I purchased the book and headed for brunch.
Flicking through those first pages that day I realised that this book was another paper friend. One who could empower me to feel less alone in my thoughts on day 1 and day 361. To speak the words that I wasn’t brave enough to say aloud at the time.
Many, many times this book has been referenced and shared via late night SOS chats to friends. Many, many times I have slept with it beneath my pillow for early morning reassurance that I can keep moving. And many, many times I have recommended its words to others - just like I do for you now.

Apparently these kind of posts don’t do it for the algorithm anymore. Apparently they get zilch engagement and apparently people don’t want to see just a photograph in the feed anymore….
Anyone other small businesses owners finding it EVEN harder to share who they are and what their business is about without these kinds of posts?
Because when you’re a small biz owner there isn’t always enough time in the day to be creating all the jazzy reels alongside all the admin, marketing, tech support, photography, buying, customer service, dispatching, designing and tea making for the team!?
So hear I am. Trying to beat the algorithm. Trying to say here we are. In all forms! Because once upon a time this kind of grid post of our latest box used to get lots of engagement…and show you who we are at WILDWOMAN.
And that feels especially important at this time of year. Don’t forget your small business friends ❤️
